In 2006, I agreed to release the source code of the x-unikey package (originally developed for Linux) under the MIT license to Apple, so that they could use the code to build the Vietnamese keyboard input in Mac OS X. From Mac OS X Leopard, released in 2007, Apple has integrated UniKey Vietnamese Input Method in the the built-in Vietnamese input of Mac OS. From 2010, the engine has also been integrated to the built-in Vietnamese keyboard in iOS (starting from iOS 4.0). So the UniKey engine is now running in all macOS computers, iPhones, iPads that have the Vietnamese keyboard input.

Picture below shows the Vietnamese keyboard called Simple Telex in macOS, which uses the Unikey Vietnamese Input Method engine.

You just need to download a Zip file, unzip it, and run UniKey directly. If you obtained installation app, it's not from our official distribution source. You should go to unikey.org and download official UniKey. X-Unikey has all the features of the Windows version, except that its GUI is still too simplified. All options are set through configuration file or keyboard shortcuts. Download X-Unikey. Go to www.unikey.blog/evkey and choose Download on the bottom side. Under Evkey 3.4.5 (this is the latest version 2019). You will download a ZIP file. After extracting the file, run the exe file. A control menu will appear but in Vietnamese interface. Please follow the instructions in the image below.

In iOS, you can find the Apple’s acknowlegdment of the use of UniKey source code in Settings - General - About - Legal - Legal Notices, as shown below.

X-Unikey

X-Unikey is Unikey ported to Linux and FreeBSD. X-Unikey lets you type Vietnamese in X Window environment. It has been tested with many popular programs, such as OpenOffice, emacs, vim, QT applications, GTK applications… X-Unikey has all the features of the Windows version, except that its GUI is still too simplified. All options are set through configuration file or keyboard shortcuts.

Pine Vietnamese HOWTO

This HOWTO shows how Pine can be setup to read and write Vietnamese emails. One special feature is the ability to automatically convert back and forth between VIQR and Unicode charsets as you read or send emails. Emails received in VIQR charset can be viewed as if they were written in unicode!
